If you have blocks, is there any reason to be starting from a hand on the track instead?
The assumption baked into that question is that the three-point start is the compromise. The thing you do in winter, on grass, at a testing day, or when the blocks are locked in a cupboard and nobody can find the key.
I think that gets it backwards. More to the point, I think the programmes with the best equipment access in the world quietly disagree with the assumption too, based on what they actually do.
When Haugen and colleagues reviewed how elite sprint coaches train acceleration, the standard menu was 10 to 50 metre sprints from blocks, a crouch, or a three-point start. Not ranked. Listed side by side.
ALTIS season plans give the position its own shorthand, 3p, sitting right next to the entry for blocks. Mike Holloway's Florida sprinters open their autumn with 20 metre runs from a three-point stance, and it is still in the programme deep into the competition phase.
That is not what a fallback looks like.
Here is the case for it, and I think this is the part that gets missed.
A block start is not one skill. It is acceleration, plus pedal spacing, plus pedal angles, plus pressure distribution across the pedals, plus reacting to a gun, plus holding a set position for an unpredictable length of time without drifting.
All of that has to be trained eventually, assuming you race. But almost none of it is the thing you are actually trying to develop on a Tuesday in November, which is projecting your body forward at a low angle and pushing the ground away behind you for the first few steps.
The three-point start keeps that part and deletes the apparatus. It takes about ninety seconds to teach, it sets up anywhere there is a line, and it means the session gets spent sprinting instead of adjusting hardware.
That is a coaching argument rather than a research finding, and I want to be upfront that it is doing most of the work here.
There is some data, though I'd hold it loosely.
A 2025 study put sixteen collegiate sprinters through 50 metre sprints from blocks, a three-point stance, and a standing start. Blocks were quickest away, which is roughly what everyone would have predicted. The more interesting result was that the three-point start beat the standing start on average speed across the full 50.
The proposed reason: in the set position, the sprinters' calves and thighs were switched on harder before the movement began, and their ankles and knees held steadier through the opening strides.
Now, sixteen athletes, one study, one lab. I don't think anyone should be updating hard on that. Sixteen collegiate sprinters is enough to detect a fairly obvious difference and nowhere near enough to characterise it precisely, and "pre-activation was higher" is the sort of finding that tends to shrink when other groups go looking for it.
What makes me take it semi-seriously is that it points the same direction as the behaviour of programmes that have every block in the world at their disposal.
When the mechanistic data and the revealed preferences of elite coaches agree, I'm more willing to believe the effect is real, even if I have no confidence at all about its size.
My best guess at why is balance, and I want to flag clearly that this is reasoning rather than something anyone has measured.
From a standing crouch, there is a hard limit on how far forward you can fold before you tip over, and that limit shows up well before you reach the body position acceleration actually wants.
The hand functions as a kickstand. It lets you hold a shape you could not otherwise balance, shoulders ahead of the feet, front leg loaded, and start pushing from the first instant instead of spending the opening steps getting into position to push.
You can test the general principle on yourself, incidentally.
Set up in a standing crouch, fold forward until you are about to fall, then put a hand down and see how much further forward you can get your shoulders. The gap between those two positions is roughly what the hand is buying you.
Here is how to set it up properly.
Set your feet as you would for any crouch start, both pointing dead ahead, 15 to 30 centimetres from the heel of the front foot to the toes of the back one, stance narrow rather than wide.
Front shin leaning forward at somewhere between 45 and 60 degrees. That angle is worth fussing over, because it sets your flight path. More lean projects you lower and flatter. A stood-up shin pops you tall on step one.
Then fold. Back roughly parallel to the ground, chest near the front thigh, hips level with the shoulders or slightly above.
The fold is not decorative. It gives the hips a long range to extend through, and it keeps the knee and ankle from firing before the hip has done its work.
Down hand is the one opposite your front leg. Fingertips bridged just behind the line, arm straight, shoulder stacked over it. Free arm bent and riding high, ready to rip.
Weight is shared between the hand and the front foot, but keep honest pressure through the back foot. That is the first thing I'd check when a start feels dead. A back foot resting on the track like an afterthought contributes nothing, and losing that push flattens the whole trajectory.
The movement has an order. The back foot punches down and back before it swings anywhere. The front shin rocks forward a few more degrees and loads the thigh.
Then everything goes at once: front leg finishing long through hip, knee and ankle, back thigh swinging through to parallel, down arm ripping back as the high arm drives forward.
Aim out and up, not just out. Forcing yourself to stay low breaks you at the hips and caps the force you can put into the ground. Push hard enough for long enough and low happens on its own.
First contact lands under your hips or just behind them, never in front. The rise to upright takes twenty to twenty-five metres, not two steps.
Two caveats before you get attached.
You cannot race from it. World Athletics rules make blocks and both hands on the track compulsory up to and including the 400.
And be careful comparing times. One timing study puts a 40 metre from a hand-release three-point start around 0.17 seconds faster than the same sprint from blocks with a gun, and that is not because the position is faster. It is because the clock starts once you are already moving.
Different trigger, different number. This is the same category of mistake as comparing a flying 30 to a blocks 30 and concluding you got faster. Compare like with like, or don't compare.
Programming it is not complicated. Runs of 10 to 50 metres, six to ten of them, recoveries of two minutes or more, and end the session when the quality ends rather than when the rep count says so.
So, to sum up:
Blocks are a competition skill, and in the weeks you need them, practise them.
The three-point start is what you will train from the majority of the time, and it asks for the same low projection and the same patient push without the kit.
The evidence that it is meaningfully better than a standing start is thin but points in a sensible direction, and the fact that programmes with unlimited block access still use it every week is, to me, the more persuasive data point.
Set it up carefully and treat each rep as acceleration training, because that is exactly what it is.
